Taken in the hour before sunrise as the mist rolls up the river past Windsor Castle. I knew the shot I wanted to get and waited until the conditions were just right - a clear, cold night before so frost would form on the river bank and there was a good chance of some mist appearing on the river. On a clear morning, a long exposure can capture the colours in the sky before dawn - something we don't often get the chance to witness.
Early morning mist on the river by the Temple. This temple marks the start of the Henley Regatta - located on a small island in a calm & tranquil part of the river Thames, early morning mist often forms here after a cold night. I set off early along the Thames Path and was there in time before the mist began to dissipate.
A long exposure of St Monans Pier, calming the seas & sky. I was there early in the morning, when the tide would be high and covering the surrounding rocks, so that I could take this shot. The sea was choppy at the time, spray splashing over the pier, but a long exposure allows time to calm the waters and the movement of the clouds was just what I was aiming for.
The Sun creeps over the brow of the hill to threaten the misty landscape below. Spoiler alert - the Sun ultimately wins! I'd walked past this spot along the Thames Path many times and knew there would be a good shot of these trees at the right time of day. One early morning I found the right time as there was still some mist on the ground beneath the trees but blue skies behind the clouds and the orange glow of the Sun coming over the horizon.
Harvest Moon over Windsor Castle
The Full Moon creeps into view beside the Round Tower of Windsor Castle. I'd worked out in advance where to be and at what time to get this shot of the Full Moon rising, but even so, I was there a bit early and worrying I'd got the timing/position a bit out...nervous minutes before the Moon crept into view and I knew I'd got it right.
Fading stars as the Sun approaches the horizon at Marsh Lock in Henley on Thames. This is a familiar place to me, so I knew that if it was a clear, still morning I'd be able to take this shot. I made my way here early one morning, just before the sun rose and the stars were beginning to fade in the night sky and the scene unfolded in front of me.
Comet Neowise rising over the Windsor Castle in the early hours of the morning. This was taken from the Long Walk at around 1am - I was hopeful that the clouds that were on the horizon earlier would clear enough for me to get the shot and thankfully they did. This is two stacked images, one with a really long exposure for the foreground and another, shorter exposure for the sky (I limited the sky's exposure to avoid any star trails).
Golden sunrise over the castle
As a thick blanket of fog lifts, the sun breaks through sending golden rays through the tress and over the river Thames by Windsor Castle.
